Designed by Hamburg-based studio Maly Hoffmann Kahleyss (MHK), the CHALLENGE Chair is a study in precision, restraint, and quiet strength. Available as a side chair or armchair, the design balances a visually slender profile with exceptional structural integrity—an intentional tension that defines the collection.

At first glance, the frame appears finely chiseled and delicate. In reality, it is meticulously engineered for durability, carved to preserve strength while achieving crisp edges and a light, architectural presence. This refined sharpness is softened by a carefully developed upholstered seat and back, designed to appear graphic while delivering lasting comfort.

As its name suggests, the CHALLENGE collection emerged from a series of technical and design challenges: shaping a cushion that feels both modern and inviting, sculpting solid wood into precise, angular forms without compromising longevity, and redefining comfort through thoughtful proportion rather than excess padding.

This disciplined approach is also evident in MHK’s broader work for CondeHouse, including the sculptural HAKAMA Table, where structure, rhythm, and material honesty take center stage. Together, these designs reflect the studio’s shared philosophy—clarity through complexity, and diversity in unity.
